Automotive Review - 2008 Mercedes Benz M-Class - From GO On The ROAD
2008 Mercedes-Benz ML320 CDI
The Good: Comfortable for Five the ML offers great handling and high quality construction and build quality, in an SUV that’s been in market for a decade.
The Bad: Expensive for its segment, Regular V-6 is shy on low-end torque Overall: The 2008 ML offers good gas mileage in a five passenger diesel SUV, if you remember Diesels from the 70s this one will surprise you.
We GO on the ROAD in the 2008 Mercedes Benz ML 320 CDI
There’s always a new 5 passenger SUV coming to market, even in this time of ever increasing gas prices, it’s one segment that’s seen a real boom in the last decade. That’s how long Mercedes Benz has been making the ML. And despite some early build quality issues from its U.S. based production; the ML has become a contender in the 5 passenger premium sport utility vehicle segment. This vehicle proves that fuel sippers come in all shapes and sizes. The Diesel Engine in the ML-320 CDI does not comply with EPA standards and cannot be sold in California (and other similar emission standard states; CT, MA, ME, NY, PA, RI, and VT).
A stellar list of powerful engine options exist within M-Class, including:
ML-350 -has a 3.5-liter V6 good for 268-horsepower and 258 lb-feet of torque.
ML-550 comes with a 5.5-liter V8 outputting 382-horsepower, 80 more than last years, ML-500.
ML63 AMG boasts a 6.3-liter V8 good for a heart pumping 507-horsepower
The 2008 Mercedes Benz ML-320 CDI is a fuel-sipping turbo diesel SUV. The ML-320 CDI powrtrain is a terrific 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel good for 215 horsepower (at 3800 rpm) and 398 lb-feet of torque which is great and you’ll love the torque of this premium SUV, especially above 2000-rpm. The transmission is a slick 7 speed automatic with all-wheel drive and the option of using steering wheel, reverse mounted electronic shifters, allowing manual shifting, or leave it in drive mode and the ML shifts seamlessly.
With 18 mpg city and 24 highway, this is one of the most-fuel-efficient nonhybrid luxury crossovers on earth. The fact that they can spoil five passengers at a time makes them even better.
The 5 passenger ML-320 offers great styling, comfort, convenience, technology, and fit and finish. Technology in the ML-320 is some of the best available as is the driving experience. The vehicle can’t be all things to all people however, therein is the potential to realize some shortcomings. If you absolutely must have room for 7 passengers, the ML will not serve your needs. The GL from is a great option however. Also, the ML does offer some utility ability and as you’ll see in the photos, we stowed a kids play slide in the back of this Premi-SUV. But more than the utility ability is what you feel when you get inside this Mercedes, as with other vehicles from the brand, you feel the solid engineering and stellar build quality when you get into a Mercedes Benz. That quality does come at a price, and though you’ll find some stellar in-segment competition (not diesel powered but 5 passenger SUV segment) are the BMW X5, Audi Q5 and Acura’s MDX all of which, come at a lower price. However none of them provide the feeling of luxury at the same level of Mercedes, (and we really like the X5). The ML-320 provides comfort, sporty handling, and luxury interior with great technology and good MPGs, bound to impress most buyers.
SAFETY
The 2008 Mercedes ML320 has advanced safety features and technology, including: Steel reinforced cabin with front and rear crumple zones; full compliment of front (dual stage with front knee bolster) airbags; Front and rear -side airbags; front and rear side curtain airbags; 3 pt belts; crash active head restraints; 4-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock & brake assist; ESP (Electronic Stability Program); Hill descent/ascent control; Tire Pressure Monitoring System; Tele-Aid system and more.
The ML also performed well in crash tests; In test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIIHS) the M Class scored the best possible result (good) in Front, Side and Rear tests. In government crash tests, the ML with stability program, also scored good results, based on a five star rating system, the ML scored five stars for Front Crash - for Driver and Passenger; five stars for side-crash - front and rear seats; and four star results in rollover tests (low probability for rollover). See full list of tests here.
Warranty: The ML320 comes with Mercedes’ 4 year/ 50k mile limited warranty coverage.
Driving Impressions - We GO on the ROAD in the ML320 and enjoy the four wheel independent suspension, exacting steering (lacking feedback). The brakes on the other hand are sure and solid, offering good solid feel that respond quickly. This SUV is heavy at nearly 5,000 lbs and despite some body roll the all-wheel-drive ML is stable and sure, responding nicely on freeways as on country switchbacks, the ML proves its prowess again and again, with great ride quality and dependable handling capability.
There are several optional grouped option packages that add to the great experience of the ML - our favorite group, is the Premium III Package which is about $8,500 and adds a long list of addition features, here’s the best of the included items in this package: Rearview Camera (almost a must have); Power Passenger Seat; ADS - Adaptive Damping System (ADS is a great system, that adjusts the damping level of the shock absorbers to help stabilize the vehicle during at and above highway speed driving, aggressive driving, or if the driver loses control of the vehicle); rain sensing wipers; power folding mirrors (side view mirrors fold in to reduce chance of being swiped when stowed or in narrow passages, they can be folded in with the push of a button); rear audio controls; DVD Nav system; Sirius Satellite Radio; 3 Zone Climate Controls; Headlamp Washing System; Bi-Xenon Curve Head Lamps; power lift gate (a nice feature, when you need to load up the groceries and your hands are full you can open the lift gate by remote) and more.
Let’s GO on the ROAD - The Way You Feel Inside - Driving the 2008 Mercedes ML-320 is a joy to drive. Power from the V6 is smooth and potent, and the brakes are strong and easy to modulate, with good feedback. The balance between ride quality and handling is stellar. The cabin is roomier than you might expect from the outside. Even with larger adults in both front seats, the legroom in back is great, in part, thanks to the indentation in the rear of the front bucket seats. Back seat passengers will nearly be able to stretch out with more than 39″ of rear legroom. Some of the other nice touches inside include: dual zone climate control, large birds eye maple wood and brushed aluminum trim give the interior an upscale feel; good stowage cubbies and available options like heated front seats, nav system, adaptive cruise control that is really intuitive, the rear seat entertainment system, backup cam, available power liftgate and more. Thoughtful and well engineered design elements set Mercedes Benz apart. The M-class offers a good bit of utility ability (see photos for play set in the rear) and 4 wheel drive. The ML has almost 30-cubic feet of stowage space in the luggage bay, drop the 2nd row seats and you’ll have stow space totaling 72-cubic feet (which is on the low end of the category).
We really like the ML-320! If you’re a small family this SUV will work really well for you. With a starting price in the mid-forties it’s best dressed with the optional packages (Options in varying Premium Packages include different safety, technology, comfort and convenience options) which can easily put your into the mid to high 50’s, very well equipped you’ll be in the low 60s. This SUV and the feeling you get inside it does come at a premium, which sets it apart from other 5 passenger premium SUVs. There’s a lot to enjoy in the M-Class from Mercedes Benz, and while it will cost more than other 5 passenger SUVs, that’s part of the reason you get one.
By the Numbers:
The 2008 Mercedes-Benz ML-320 MSRP (starting price, not including destination charge)
The 2008 Mercedes ML-320 - 3.0-liter V6 with 215-horsepower and 398 lb-feet of torque MSRP starts at $44,650
By the new EPA Fuel Standards (updated for 2008): The ML320 CDI is rated at 18 mpg/city & 24mpg/highway and we averaged nearly 24 mpg on diesel fuel on a long distance trip to the suburbs. Mercedes estimates it between 19 and 29, so you may do better than 24. And a reminder that it’s unfair (apples to oranges) to compare ’07’s (and earlier) gas mileage to ’08s and later as the way the tests were conducted changed for 2008.
